The University of Michigan, Ann Arbor is not only the largest public university in Michigan, we are also among the state’s biggest employers. The University takes great pride in the positive social and economic impact we have on the state. Each year we undertake a thorough data collection effort in order to effectively measure and communicate the University’s contribution to regions outside Washtenaw County.

The University of Michigan purchases an enormous range of products and services that include food and catering, property maintenance, graphics and printing, transcription, laboratory equipment, computers, and countless others.

In 2022 Michigan Medicine clinics and hospitals served over 2.8 million patients.

In 2022, Michigan Medicine served over 2.8 million patients, including over 56,000 surgeries, over 1000 life flights, and over 110,000 emergency room visits. Roughly 1 out of 4 Michigan residents were served by Michigan Medicine in 2022.

In 2022 the University of Michigan was ranked by Money Magazine as the best college in America by value.

One factor in Money Magazine’s ranking was the Go Blue Guarantee which funds 100% of education costs for students with families that make less than $75,000 per year. 1 out of 4 in-state undergraduates pay no tuition.

The URC, of which the University if a member, estimated in 2021 that the URC members generated over $650 million in tax revenue for the state.

In FY 2021, the URC increased tax revenues for the State of Michigan by $650 million. While the main focus of these universities is not to generate tax revenue, the economic impact of the URC universities was more than 22 times the state’s total appropriations across the three universities.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has awarded 7 consecutive Cooperative Agreements to the University of Michigan for administration of CIGLR.

The Cooperative Institute for Great Lakes Research oversees research to protect the Great Lakes. CIGLR scientists study issues including climate change, harmful algal blooms, protection of ecosystem services, and others.
